 Description  « Hide
XWiki offers many features, and this might seem overwhelming for beginners. We should add an option in the user settings, allowing them to select the normal or advanced interface.

Advanced interface is the one we have now. The normal interface will hide many options from the menu.

In an ideal wiki, administrators develop applications, i.e. create classes, sheets, templates, panels, and normal users just click on a link and fill-in a web form. This way class and object editors are not needed, the default editor should be the only one needed, code, xml and history are not user's concerns, etc.

Sergiu, I don't think this can be done be done for B2, can it? I would personally even have moved this to 1.1

It's not much work, it can be done in about an hour.

Oh ! This seems like an important step for me in terms of wider scale usability and adoption. If it is not too much work, I would plead that it be done before 1.0 to get the maximum impact on this feature at launch time. It makes a lot of sense in some customer situations too.

I do think this has to be done in such a way that it is fairly evident to a normal user that they can move to an advanced user UI. It shouldn't be hidden somewhere deep in user preferences. We don't want to make it difficult for advanced users just learning about XWiki to discover advanced features. Maybe something directly on the menu which is stored in user preferences ?

Implemented in rev. 1889.

The exact structure of the Simple user menu is still being voted.

It's implemented for B2, much easier (thanks guys)
One thing: How do you bump a user up to advanced?

Brandon Esbach added a comment - 09/Jan/07 15:50
Found the problem. The Admin user must be reimported to enable the advanced views for the administrator (so that the admin user can setup users as advanced or normal).
Sorry for the interruption.

The XWikiUser page also need to be imported. Each user can change his own view. I'll comment about this in the release notes thanks
