Translation script fails to compute tags

The following error appears when using translation script on release agent which uses Git 2.20:

Latest tag found:
fatal: ambiguous argument '': unknown revision or path not in the working tree.

apparently it's related to the following command which returns empty result:

git tag -l --sort=-refname "*14.10.*"
