Invitation Application doesn't work when inviting more than 2 people

When inviting more than two people through the Invitation Application, all the pending invitations after the first two (which work correctly) end up in a "Unknown state (null)" and the "Accept Invitation" page for those invitations gives the error:
"This request cannot be processed because the status of this invitation is Unknown status (null)."
