Description
After receiving feedback from an XWiki Power-User, we find that creation of links is a difficult issue. Since linked data is so important to the wiki concept, I propose that we need to make it easier.
- People usually use tabbed browsing so they will have open the page they want to link to
- For a user, wiki:Space.Page is an internal ID, they perceive the page as it's title or it's URL in their browser.
- Google Docs automatically converts URLs to links when you press space with the cursor at the end of the URL, if you press backspace with the cursor at the space after the end of the URL, the URL will be converted back to text but the space will not be removed.
- To create a link URL in Google Docs: type/paste the URL and press space, continue typing.
- To create a non-link URL in Google Docs: type/paste the URL and press space then press backspace then continue typing.
I propose we adopt the same solution as Google Docs. We might be able to reuse some existing technology from http://ckeditor.com/addon/autolink
As a secondary feature, we might consider to convert URLs which point to other wiki pages into the relevant wiki links. This requires a bit more effort but provides much more value. Importantly this can be done as a secondary add-on to the auto-linking.
