StackOverflow error when trying to format a null Date

$xwiki.formatDate(null) will enter an infinite recursion, ending in a StackOverflowError, but generating a lot of garbage in the logs before that (there's a wrong e.printStackTrace before each recursion step, which prints longer and longer stacktraces).
