No way to access the document currently being exported from the pdf template

The pdf.vm and pdfhtmlheader.vm templates have a mechanism that allows to customize the export of the pdf using a "pdftemplate", explained more in detail in here http://platform.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/AdminGuide/Configuration#HCustomizingthePDFexportLook26Feel .

However, when overriding the header and the footer of the pdf export from such a template, there is no way to access the document currently being exported from velocity ($doc will be the template, $tdoc will be the template, etc). It used to be possible in 4.x versions using something like $cdoc but that has stopped working in recent versions.
